Making a connection with Wong Kar-wai's Happy Together is not something I would have thought to do—so thanks for that! The Red, White & Royal Blue movie felt like "content"—something produced to fulfill a fandom, since McQuiston's book was such a surprise hit—rather than anything with any aspiration to art. A bit of fluffy entertainment to waste some time. I also think it's meant to appeal to its core demo: cis het women (although the source material is by a queer person). And the fact that straight actors Taylor Zakhar Perez (who was fun in The Minx) and Nicholas Galitzine (who also camps it up in the hilarious Bottoms) only drives home that tepid reality. But I still suppose gay male romcoms are seen as progress since we lack so much representation and simply seeing two young men fall in love and act stupid is a political act to help sway the moms of Middle America and beyond.
